SPAR AND NSA BACK CAMPAIGN TO END GENDER BASED VIOLENCE
President Cyril Ramaphosa calls the scourge of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) as a second pandemic affecting South Africa.
SPAR and Netball South Africa (NSA) have thrown their weight behind the campaign to end GBV in the country by forming partnerships with LifeLine and the National Prosecuting Authority to create awareness of GBV, provide counselling for victims and improve the effectiveness of the government-supported Ithuthuzela care centres.
SPAR Group Marketing Executive Mike Prentice said in his welcome message to participants at last week’s 2021 SPAR Challenge, that the series would be used to enforce the joint messaging of the SPAR Group and NSA.
“We are very proud to be actively involved in addressing the negative impact of GBV in our society and call upon everybody to play their part in eradicating this social evil,” said Prentice.
SPAR Proteas captain Bongi Msomi is one of End GBV’s most outspoken advocates. She uses her campaign in which she distributes sanitary pads to under-privileged girls and women to emphasise the need to bring GBV to an end.
When she hands out packs of pads, she addresses the girls about hygiene and about the need to resist GBV.
“We have to put a stop to our women being killed and injured,” said Msomi.
“Throughout the country, at all levels of society, women and girls are being abused physically, sexually and mentally. We need everyone who becomes aware of this sort of abuse to report it immediately and to support the victims.”
