SPAR PROTEAS CONTINUE THEIR DOMINANCE AGAINST WALES
Cardiff, Wales – The seventeenth meeting between the SPAR Proteas and Wales got off to a great start with the host making sure that they close off South Africa at every angle and with opportunity that they got. Dorette Badenhorst went with experience with her starting seven. For the better part of the first quarter, it was evenly matched between the two however, the SPAR Proteas’ experience kicked off as the quarter progressed. Wales capitalised on South Africa’s errors, caught up on the lead, and drew the first quarter 14 – all.
South Africa made a few changes going into the second quarter especially in mid-court with Khanyisa Chawane and Tshina Mdau making way for Izette Griesel at Centre and Shadine van der Merwe moving to wing defence and Nicola Smith coming in at goal defence. The SPAR Proteas defence duo of Maweni and Smith proved to be very solid as it took Wales seven minutes to score their first goal in the second quarter.
The SPAR Proteas seemed to have found their rhythm in the second quarter as they made sure that they extend their lead and take control of the game. They (South Africa) managed to take the quarter 17 – 5 and the score going into half time was 31 – 19 to South Africa.
Zanele Vimbela and Elmere van der Berg were introduced into the game and Chawane made a return. South Africa continued with their dominance in the ‘championship quarter’, and they threw everything at Wales. The defence team worked very hard throughout the quarter and restricted the Wales attack to only single digits – the quarter ended 47 – 28 in favour of the SPAR Proteas
Wales came back a stronger team of the two in the last quarter as they took the game to South Africa. Dorette Badenhorst gave Southern Stings goal attack Nichole Taljaard her maiden cap in this match and she stepped up. Wales won the quarter 16 – 14 however this was not enough to win the match. The SPAR Proteas won the match 61-44.
