Gauteng continued their dominance of South African netball at the SPAR National Championship in Bela Bela on Saturday with yet another crown. The province is the holder of the trophies for the Telkom Netball League (Jaguars), National Championship (Tshwane), Varsity Netball (Tuks), U21 National Championship and u19 National Championship. The only national competition’s trophy that is not in their possession, is the USSA one (currently held by NWU).

* Gauteng North/Tshwane has extended their total number of titles to 26 (out of 68) which the most by any province/district.

* Gauteng/Tshwane has now won the tournament four times consecutively. It is the fourth time a team has won four titles in a row, the last being Gauteng North between 1997 and 2000.

* For the second consecutive year, Dr Kenneth Kaunda defeated Tshwane in the round-robin stage before losing to them in the final.

* Gauteng/Gauteng North/Tshwane played in their 10th out of the last 11 finals.

* Marlize de Bruin and Akosua Mensah has been in the winning side at the National Champs on each occasion in the last four years.

* Eight players, Nozipho Ntshangase, Ine-Marí Venter, Tinita van Dyk, Phindile Sithole, Tracey Mthunzi, Melodine Jacobs, Jeanette Vermeulen and Jamie van Wyk won the title for the first time in their career.

* Monique Reyneke, captain and goal defence of North West, became the first player in 26 years from Dr Kenneth Kaunda/North West to be named as the National Champs’ overall best player. The last player from her district or province to receive the award, was Irene van Dyk back in 1994.
