Sun City, North West Province, South Africa: Following the 30 player squad that the SPAR Proteas Head Coach Dorette Badenhorst had compiled two weeks ago, the team assembled in Sun City just outside Rustenburg over the weekend for a training camp before a final team could be selected.

The coaching duo of Dorette Badenhorst and Dumisani Chauke worked with a pool of players and had the difficult task of choosing a team that will face off against Malawi at the SPAR Challenge International Test Series which will be played between the 26th – 29th November 2020 at the Sun City, Superbowl.

“We have had to look at a group of players to choose from and our challenge was always balancing experience with new blood. The goal is 2023 so we needed to make sure that we pick the best for this series and also make sure that each player that is here will get a run so we can see what they can do, the mood in the camp is high and I think we pushed ourselves hard today at training,” says SPAR Proteas Head Coach Dorette Badenhorst.

The Malawi Queens and SPAR Proteas will battle it out in a three match test series, and they are both ranked fifth and sixth respectively in the world according to the INF World Rankings. The last time these two nations met in Cape Town last year, the SPAR Proteas emerged victorious winning the match 56 – 51.

The two have met 33 times and SPAR Proteas winning 20 times, drew once and lost 12 times.
The final team is as follows:

  • Sigrid Burger, Khanyisa Chawane, Izette Griesel, Rome Joubert, Kamogelo Maseko, Phumza Maweni, Tshina Mdau, Sikholiwe Mdletshe, Bongiwe Msomi (Captain), Lenize Potgieter, Lefebre Rademan, Monique Reyneke, Nicola Smith, Shadine vd Merwe, Ine-Mari Venter
