Captain Bongi Msomi and Zanele Vimbela will be representing Team South Africa at their third Commonwealth Games this year. Both were together in Glasgow in 2014, the Gold Coast in 2018 and now at Birmingham in 2022. We spent some time with Zanele on what it means to her being back for a third Games.
Congratulations this will be your third Commonwealth Games for Team South Africa. How does it feel playing for Team SA a third time?
It is always a huge honour representing Team SA for the third time, the excitement I feel is like being involved with it for the first time. The feeling never fades.
Any key standouts between Glasgow (2014) and Gold Coast (2018)?
2014 was my international debut and will always be special. 2018 improvement in the ranking from previous Comm Games despite losing key players to injuries. This makes us a team that is incredible to overcome those adverse events.
What are you looking forward to for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham?
We’re looking forward to competing against the teams and going for a podium finish.
What has been your secret to success?
To keep working hard and not giving up, being disciplined on training even when you are not with the coaches. It’s all about being consistent with your training, especially coming back after a major injury.
Do you have a special message for South Africa?
Please support Team SA as we do our best to compete for our nation, together we can do more. We love you and thank you for being behind Team SA for all these times. 🙏🏾
